Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
